Tommy graduated from Calhoun High School in 1969 and joined the United States Marine Corps in 1970. Shortly after enlisting, he was drafted to serve in the Vietnam War, where he proudly defended his country.
On January 20, 2024, Tommy and Gloria officially tied the knot after a decade together, their marriage standing as a testament to enduring faith and love.
Tommy had a variety of hobbies that brought him joy, including shooting pool, practicing karate, and painting houses.
In 2022, he deepened his spiritual journey by giving his life to the Lord and joining His Mercy Ministries in Gordon, Georgia.
He leaves to cherish his memory :his loving wife, Gloria Smith of Milledgeville, GA; sons, Shurn Chatman (Charlene Chatman), Melvin Wiggins, both of Milledgeville, Georgia daughter, Yoland Surrey (Steve Surrey) of Dexter, GA; siblings, Rose Strange of Irwinton, GA, Lena Mack (Otis Mack) of Irwinton, GA, Annie Dean of Milledgeville, GA, Kathy Rease (Eddie Rease) of Irwinton, GA, John T. Smith (Rose Smith) of Irwinton, GA; a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
