Obituary

It is with sympathy, the management and staff of Slater's Funeral Home, Inc. announce the passing of Ms. Evelyn Stephens, Milledgeville, Georgia. Ms. Stephens passed away on Friday, July 29, 2022.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at 3:00 PM from the Flipper Chapel A.M. E. Church, Milledgeville, Georgia. Interment will be held from the Scenic Memorial Gardens, Milledgeville, Georgia.

Mrs. Evelyn Gene Putnam was born on March 6, 1944, in the Baldwin County Hospital in Milledgeville, GA. She attended and graduated from Baldwin County Schools before beginning her career at Central State hospital where she retired after 27 years of
service. She was preceded in death by her mother Ms. Annie Mae Putnam Gilmore, her daughter Ms. Tammy Burch and son Mr. Michael Stephens.

Evelyn married Mr. Ayton Stephens and was preceded in death by him as well.

Evelyn, affectionately known as “Nute” was humble and selfless, but most importantly she loved God. She showed it in everything she
did. In the way she raised her children and grandchildren, in the way she cared for her mother and aunt in their time of illness and in the way she loved and worked diligently in her beloved church Flipper Chapel AME. Anytime the church doors were open she was making her way there. Wherever there was missionary work to be done, her and her road crew, Ms. Jannette Foston and Ms. Lucy Stewart, would be on their way to be of assistance.

All around Milledgeville, Nute was known for her whipping cream pound cakes, key lime cakes and strawberry cakes. And if you
wanted the best collard greens and hot water cornbread patties, look no further, she was your girl. She absolutely loved having the family all together for gatherings. This made her the happiest. She also loved music. She would ride along bobbing her head to any genre of music that was playing on the radio. She loved singing in the choir at church. When she led songs, the whole church would be on their feet. She became “Grandma Nute” to so many people that she encountered. She always had an encouraging word or prayer. She would always offer her favorite scriptures of comfort, Isaiah 53:5 - By His stripes you are healed and Philippians 4:13- I can do all
things through Christ who strengthens me. And she would always end it with “We believe and receive His word, Amen”.

Evelyn “Nute” departed from this earth to be with her heavenly father on July 29, 2022. She will be greatly missed.

To cherish her love and legacy she left behind her 2 children, Ms. Wendy Lowe and Mr. Terrance Burch. 2 brothers Mr. Tommie Gilmore and Mr. Jerry (Naomi) Gilmore. Her grandchildren, Mrs. De'Adre(Jeremy) Saincine, Mr. Leo (Shondra) King, Mr. Raquaz Burch, Mr. Deonta Stephens, Mr. Tramaine Perkins, Ms. Amber Burch, Mr. Aaron Burch, Ms. Doree Stephens, Mr. Alex Burch, Mr. Aden Burch and Ms. Kennedi Stephens. 12 great grandchildren, honorary son and daughter Mr. David & Karen Luke and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
