Mother Pansy Stephens Obituary

It is with sympathy, the management and staff of Slater’s Funeral Home, Inc. announce the passing of Mother Pansy Stephens of Milledgeville, Georgia. Mrs. Stephens passed away on Saturday June 15, 2024.

Mother Pansy Coleman Stephens was born March 30,1945, to the late Frank Coleman and Lola Jones Coleman.

Mother Stephens was raised in a God-fearing home. At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior and was baptized demonstrating outwardly her decision to commit and surrender her life to Christ. She attended the public schools of Laurens County in Dudley, GA and went on to further her education by completing some college.

In 1964, she married the love of her life, Bishop Jack Stephens. This union was blessed with two beautiful daughters, Tabitha and Sarita. As a family they enjoyed spending time together and as their grandchildren were added, they continued to bond as a family. They were intentional in instilling and teaching God’s word to them and emphasizing the importance of worshiping and serving God as a way of life.

Mothers Stephens was employed as a Behavioral Specialist at the Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, GA, where she served a vital part in the mission of the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Development Disabilities (DBHDD). Throughout her tenure there, she achieved many commendations and certificates of leadership. After 34 years of faithful service, she retired with an exemplary work ethic.

Mother Stephens was a member of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) National Bishop Wives Circle, and very supportive of The Southern GA Second Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction as well as the Four-Square District. She often traveled with her husband on his many preaching engagements to various churches throughout the jurisdiction and the state. She would travel with him annually to the National Convocation in Memphis, Tennessee.

As the wife of a jurisdictional bishop and pastor, she often hosted visiting ministers and their families in her home. She was very hospitable and often prepared dinner and baked cakes for her guests. German chocolate cake was one of her specialties.

Mother Stephens was also active in the two churches Bishop Stephens pastored- Dixon Temple COGIC (where she maintained her long-time membership), and Greater Union Grove COGIC. In addition to being a dynamic speaker, she was a notable Bible study teacher, president of the Christian Women’s Council (CWC), and teacher of Young People Willing Workers (YPWW). She continued to serve faithfully until her health declined.

Mother Stephens was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Bishop Jack Stephens and daughters, Tabitha, and Sarita. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Robert Coleman and sisters, Geraldine Minor, Mildred Winkfield, nephew, Danny Coleman and her grandson Stephen Moton.
