Mattie Warren Obituary

Mrs. Mattie Eve Winkfield Warren, of Devereux, Georgia entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, June 15, 2021.

Graveside services were held on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at 11:00AM from the Saint Mary Baptist Church, Sparta, Georgia. Public viewing was held on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 from 5-7pm at the funeral home.

Mattie Eve Winkfield Warren was born and raised in Sparta, GA to the late great Mr. Ezekiel “Big Pa” Winkfield and Mrs. Minnie Kate Winkfield.  She attended and graduated from Hancock Central High School.

Always willing to learn something new, she received her diploma as a Medical Receptionist from Central Georgia Technical College and her certificate as a Dental Hygienist through mail-in courses long before the boom of online classes.

Mattie worked at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, GA in various positions, the last being Building Supervisor before retiring after 35 years of service.

Now retiring allows you to do more of what you want, which is exactly what she did. She founded the Spiritual Divine Gospel Singers in 2009 with her children and grandchildren and began traveling throughout Georgia singing for the Lord. Each year in August, Spiritual Divine would invite a number of gospel groups to come and celebrate their anniversary together. It was something that she looked forward to doing every year.

Also, after retiring, she became a substitute teacher within the Baldwin County School System for Eagle Ridge Elementary, Oak Hill Middle, and Baldwin High Schools.

Mattie was a faithful member of St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church in Milledgeville, GA.  In addition to attending St. Mary, she also attended Stanton Grove Baptist Church (formerly Stancey Grove) in Devereux, GA where her father was a member.

She was also faithful when it came to taking care of her mother, Mrs. Minnie Kate Winkfield. When you saw Mattie, you saw Mrs. Minnie Kate or Grandma to most of us.  She did everything she could to make sure that the Matriarch of our family was well taken care of.

Being the ultimate caregiver, if you have ever stopped by her house, you would notice the “mini” farm of goats, a hog, dogs, and on a few occasions her grandson’s horse.  She and her “daughter” dog, Sandy, have a special connection and they truly took care of each other.  She cared for them all.

She is preceded in death by her father, Mr. Ezekiel Winkfield, and sisters, Nettie W. M. Thorpe and Theresa W. King.

Mattie will be forever loved and missed by all who have come to know her. She leaves to cherish her memories her husband, Charles Warren of 52 ½ years; her mother, Mrs. Minnie Kate Winkfield, her children, daughters Sherry Warren-Campbell (Travis), Peggy Warren, Cathy Warren, and son Brady Warren (Marsha’); her grandchildren, Cameron Roach, Joshua Wilson, Natasha Roach, Kayla Campbell, Contrevious Wilson, Kristin Warren, Ezekiel Wilson, Myeisha Cuyler, Jared Campbell, and Kelli Warren; her great-grandchildren, Leontavious, Carson, Kiya, and Morgan (who she affectionately called “little Mattie”); her aunt, Luella W. Ingram; her siblings, Mary W. Mordi, EK Winkfield (Rosa), KC Winkfield (Gail), Moses Winkfield (Gloria), Betty W. G. Stevenson (Rev. Jessie), and Janet W. Roberson (Willie), and a beautiful abundance of nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins and loving friends and gospel singing families. And lest not forget her “daughter” and “son” dogs, Sandy and Blacky whom she loved so dearly.
