She fought a good fight and Thursday, March 2, 2023, she peacefully finished her course. Mattie was born December 27, 1927, in Baldwin County to the late Peter James and Mamie Lee (Simmons) James.
Mattie accepted Jesus Christ as her savior at an early age. She was a faithful member of Peeler Chapple Church where she was an usher until her health declined. She loved going to church and serving the Lord. She also loved to sing. You could hear Mattie singing her favorite hymns. She enjoyed fellowship with her family, her church family, and her friends.
Mattie was united in marriage to the late Claude Hill. She had no children of her own but loved spending time with her nieces and nephews. She would later join in holy matrimony to the late Cato Reaves. Their union would last 43 years until his death. They were a lovely couple, and they could be seen around town together enjoying each other's company and visiting family and friends in his hometown Eatonton and in Milledgeville as well.
Mattie attended school in Jones and Baldwin County. She was a dedicated employee with Georgia College and with Central State Hospital until she retired. Mattie is preceded in death by six of her siblings, the late Willie Lee James, Eugene James, Ozie James, Howard James, Ernest James, and Etta Pearl Sturges.
She leaves to cherish her memories: a sister, Ms. Ethel Jordan; brother, Mr. Albert James, both residing in Pittsburgh, PA; a sister-inlaw, Ms. Laconia James of Milledgeville, GA. She also leaves to cherish her memories a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, many cousins, and a ton of other family and friends
