Lucy Stewart Obituary

Lucy Belle Stewart was born in Milledgeville, Georgia, on September 6, 1935. When Lucy was 5 years old, she and her family left Milledgeville and relocated to Porchester, New York, where they had family. Lucy was educated in the public schools of New York, and upon completing High School, she applied to and was accepted to Livingstone College in North Carolina. While attending Livingstone, Lucy joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She graduated from Livingstone College in 1957 as a Senior Class Officer.

After graduating from Livingstone College, Lucy returned to New York, where she worked in the field of medical research and infectious disease management. During her time in New York, she was active in her church as a Missionary, Youth Director, and member of the Steward Board. As a newlywed, Lucy Stewart returned to Milledgeville, GA, in the early 70s, where she began her career in Social Services with the Department of Family and Children Services. She continued her educational endeavors by earning her master's degree in social work from Fort Valley State University. Lucy retired from the Department of Family and Children Services with 30 years of service to the families in Baldwin and surrounding counties. After her retirement, Lucy continued to serve her community in many ways. As an active member of Flipper Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, she was a member of the Emma Freeman Women's Missionary Society, the Steward Board, a Stewardess, and Sunday School Superintendent. Lucy led the work of the local Lay Organization and served as the Program Committee Chair.  She also served as the Parliamentarian for the Macon Conference Women's Missionary Society. In addition to her love for her church, she loved Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., where she was a member for over 65 years.  She held various offices and chaired committees within the sorority throughout the years. She played an instrumental part in the chartering of Alpha Alpha Phi Omega, Milledgeville Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Lucy remained active, attending church and community meetings regularly until she became physically unable. She continued to drive well into her eighties and maintained her sharp wit, sweet spirit, and love for her church, sorority, and community.

She would often say that she did not know why God was keeping her around for so long because she outlived all of the members of her immediate family.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Simmie Stewart and Louise Preston, her brothers, Jimmie Stewart and William Stewart, and her sister, Blanche. She leaves behind a circle of devoted loved ones who will forever treasure the memories and love shared during their time together. Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Battle, Sr. (Judi), Mariama Chisolm (Jordonath), Nathaniel Battle, Jr. (Mariah) and Master Carmelo Battle, nieces, nephews, and a host of devoted friends will forever cherish the memories and love shared with Lucy Stewart.
