Lee Rivers Obituary

Mr. Lee Arthur Rivers, of 2900 Chester Field Way, Conyers, Georgia passed away on Friday February 7, 2020.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 12:00 NOON from the Greenwood Baptist Church in Shady Dale, Georgia. Interment was held on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.

Lee Arthur Rivers was born on December 16, 1941 in Monticello, Georgia. He was one of nine children born to the late Willie Lee Rivers and Hattie Lee Hill Rivers.

He accepted Christ at an early age at Greenwood Baptist Church.

Lee attended Crossroad Elementary, Carrie H. Taylor Junior High School, and graduated from Jasper County Training School in 1959. He continued his education at Fort Valley State College and graduated in 1963. While attending Fort Valley State, he served as campus security officer and provided laundry and delivery services for his fellow Wildcats.

Upon graduation from college in 1963, Lee began a career at General Motors that spanned more than 36 years. While at GM, he served as the Materials Supervisor and Body Shop Superintendent before retiring in 1999.

Lee was drafted in 1964 and served his country faithfully in the United States Army for two years. He was honorably discharged in 1966.

Lee was married in March 1967 to his sister Hattie’s teacher, Ella Frances Smith, until her death in 2007. This union was blessed with two children, Stephanie Lenette Rivers  and Steven Broderick Rivers.

After reconnecting with Greenwood Baptist Church, he served on the Deacons Ministry, the Ushers Ministry as the Ushers Ministry Liaison, the Transportation Ministry and the Finance Committee. Lee also owned a taxi business until 2006. Although he closed the business, family and friends will attest that he took every opportunity to keep his “taxi” driving skills sharp.

Lee was united in marriage to Geraline Rixter in 2010.

He was a passionate CB club member (Citizen Band Radio). He was also a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Olivia Haydel Senior Center, American Legion Post 77 Honor Guard, Rockdale County Election and Voter Registration, JCTS Annual Reunion Coordinator and the FVSU 1963 Alumni Club.

He was preceded in death by five brothers: Nathaniel Robinson, Willie Rivers, Columbus Rivers, Harvey Lee Rivers and Charlie Rivers; two sisters: Mary Magdeline Rivers and Hattie Louise Rivers; and brother-in-law Michael Rixter.

Lee departed this life on February 7, 2020.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 10 years Geraline Rivers, daughter Stephanie Lenette Rivers, sons Steven Broderick Rivers and D’Aconte Rixter; grandchildren: DeMario Mabin, Alexandria Adams, Sommer Rixter, DeMarco Rixter, Andrew Rixter and Zoey Rixter; stepmother, Betty Rivers; his sister Vera Kate Rivers and brothers Calvin Chester Rivers (Willie Jean) and Bobby L. Rivers; brother-in-law James Rixter (Betty); sister-in-law Rosalyn Rixter; a host of other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
