Katie Lou Travis, affectionately known as “Pretty Sis” was born on September 28, 1926 in Devereux, Georgia to the late Oneda and Aaron Travis. Katie was the oldest daughter and second child of Oneda and Aaron. At an early age, she learned the meaning of hard work, tending to the Travis family land, crops and farm alongside her parents and siblings. A woman of many talents, she enjoyed working with her hands, planting, sewing, cooking, working outdoors in her flowers and fixing things. She was great at caring for her family, raising some of her siblings as her own. She attended elementary school at Jones Chapel Church School and went on to attend Warren Chapel High School. Katie committed her life to the Lord at an early age, always giving God the glory and praise. She was a faithful member of Powell Grove Baptist Church, where Katie sang in the choir and had a quartet with her siblings. She was joined in holy marriage to the late David Horton of Sparta, Georgia and they moved to Detroit, Michigan to build their lives together. From this union, they birthed three daughters, Burnell (aka Big Girl), Sandra (aka Little Girl) and Veleanar (aka Baby Girl/Pookie). Katie has always had a knack for the medical field, and taking care of others. As a young girl, she assisted midwives, and later attended school for Nurse’s Aide Training. She worked at Kirkwood Memorial Hospital in Michigan. Katie left her job in Detroit, and returned to Georgia to care for her mother. She also worked at Hancock Memorial Hospital. She devoted her time and life's work to the care of others, to the love and support of family and to making her dwelling a beautiful home. In her later years, she joined Abundant Life Word Fellowship in Eatonton, Georgia under the leadership of Pastor George and First Lady Utuk. On January 21, 2022 Katie entered into rest with her daughters by her side at Chaplinwood Rehabilitation Center under hospice care. Katie Lou Travis was preceded in death by her parents Aaron and Oneda Travis, and by her brothers and their wives: Calvin (Lillian) Travis, Aaron (Pinkie Lee) Travis, Hubank (Lucy) Travis, Johnnie (Marie) Travis, Carlton (Nancy) Travis Sr., Jefferson (Dorothy)Travis, Sr. and loving brother in law, Elbert Terry, Sr. She leaves to cherish her memories her daughters: Burnell (Willie) Harper, Minister Sandra Horton, Veleanar Horton and Geraldine (Willie) Hunter; granddaughters: Zaleana (Paul) McCain, Nadirah (Jeremy) Mayweather, Sherry Harper, Valerie (James) Hunter; great-grandchildren: Kassidy Hunter, Jaiden McCain, Jaelyn McCain, Jeremiah Mayweather and Josiah Mayweather; dear loving sister, Oneda (Elbert) Terry, sister in-law, Beverly (Clarence) Griffin and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
