On Tuesday, May 3, 2022, Mr. James Hurt Sr., of Milledgeville, Georgia entered into eternal rest peacefully. James was born on October 14, 1934, in Eatonton Georgia, to the parentage of the late Mr. Richard Hurt Sr. and the late Mrs. Pauline Dennis Hurt. He relocated to Milledgeville, Georgia with his family at a young age and received his education within the Baldwin County School District. James accepted Christ at an early age and joined New Hope Baptist Church.

James later met the love of his life, Ms. Lula Tolbert, whom he affectionately called “Honey,” and they were married on December 25, 1955. They were married for sixty years before she preceded him in death on May 19, 2016, leaving many precious memories that he cherished.

The eldest of eleven children, James began working at a very young age alongside his father which he learned the principle of hard work. This later inspired him to become the excellent provider he was for his own family. He was employed at Griffin Pipe Company, also known as the “brickyard” for several years and he proudly talked about his ability to lift and throw heavy pipes. He was also employed by Choo Choo Supply and C.T. Harris Inc. before retiring as a bus driver for the Baldwin County Board of Education in 2006.

James have always loved gospel music which later led him to become a background singer for James Manson and The Piney Grove Singers gospel group. He was proud to share this experience with those around him. He would frequently call the radio station to request that his favorite gospel songs be dedicated to his late wife. In addition to his love for gospel music, he enjoyed working in the yard and cooking his favorite foods like collard greens. He shall be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle as well as a man of great strength, courage, and perseverance.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by one brother, Rudolph Hurt; four sisters, Marie Hurt, Mary Samuels, Eula Mae Hampton, and Geraldine Strange; and one great-granddaughter, Kallai Warren.

He is survived by six children Joanne Todd, Denese (Rabon) Brown, Kathy (Larry Sr.) Evans, Sandra (Melvin) Brantley, James Hurt Jr., all of Milledgeville, Ga., and Dr. Michelle (devoted son-in-law Hardy Jr.) Knox of Atlanta, Ga; two sisters, Ola Bell (Bobby Sr.) Hightower and Geneva (Richard) Hightower; three brothers, Harrison Hurt (Willie Mae), Willmon (Ruby) Hurt all of Milledgeville, Ga., and Richard Hurt Jr. of Eatonton, Ga.; one sister-in-law Vera Choice; two brothers-in-law Dennis (Mary) Tolbert Jr. and Milton Hampton Sr. all of Milledgeville, Ga., nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other loving
