Mr. Herschel Evans, of Milledgeville, Georgia passed away on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at his residence.
Funeral services were held on Friday, November 5, 2021 at 2:00 PM from the Wesley Chapel AME Church, Milledgeville, Georgia. Interment will be held privately in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Milledgeville, Georgia.
Mr. Herschel Evans, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie and Hattie Taylor Evans, was the second born child of seven children. He was born on March 10, 1929, in Baldwin County, GA. Herschel was educated in the Baldwin County Public Schools and graduated from Eddy High School. School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 where he served in Korea during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1949. After serving his country , he enrolled in Morris Brown College, College, Atlanta, Atlanta, GA. He received many awards and accolades as a student athlete while matriculating at Morris Brown College. College. He was most proud of the Athletic Hall of Fame Award he received as a Football and Baseball Player. He was enshrined into the Morris Brown College Hall of Fame in 2005. Prior to his relocation to Milledgeville, Milledgeville, GA he was employed at Lockheed Martin in Marietta, Marietta, GA. During his employment years he worked as a contract painter and retired from Central State Hospital in 1985. Herschel was a loyal member of American Legion Post 523 where he served as Commander over numerous years. He had been a member in good standing of the American Legion continuously for over 60 years. He was cited as an outstanding contributor to the accomplishment of the programs of the American Legion. Legion. Growing up he worshiped at Second Macedonia but transferred his membership to Greater Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church where his family worshiped. As a member there he was a trustee and advisor to the church renovation. He was known as the “Architect”. A cornerstone is embedded in the structure of the church reflecting his contribution. contribution. Other than a family man who loved his wife, daughters, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was a lover of fishing. fishing. He took his children as well as his grandchildren fishing when they were younger. He also was an extemporaneous speaker who could quote some of the great philosophers. Also, he was a great storyteller. He would reminisce about his time at Morris Brown and the Metropolitan area of Atlanta and the many people he encountered along the way. His favorite saying – Old soldiers never die they just fade away. In addition to his parents, his sisters, sisters, Ruth E. Griffin and Margaret E. Ford preceded him in death. In December 1951, he was united in holy matrimony to Mary Frances Butts. This union lasted more than sixty-nine years and was blessed with 3 daughters: daughters: Denise Gayle Waller (Jerome) of Milledgeville, Milledgeville, GA; Karen LaVerne Rhymer and Kimberly Evans-Gates of Marietta, Marietta, GA. He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances, Frances, his three daughters, eight grandchildren, Christopher D. (Alberta) Waller, Marietta, GA, Reginald L. Waller, Norcross, GA, Kyle E. (Carissa) Rhymer, Queens, New York, Kevan J. Rhymer, Covington, GA, Jaimye N. Rhymer, Jean-Pierre Moreau, Kameron M. Gates and Mario M. Moreau, Marietta, GA; seven great-grandchildren. Also, survived by his brother, Bennie (Nina) Evans, Milledgeville, GA; sisters Betty Delgado, Detroit, MI; Johnnie Evans (Frederick) Speights, Rex, GA; Alma Evans Speights of, Milledgeville, GA; a host of loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
