We gather here today to honor the life and legacy of Herbert Lee Grable, a beloved member of our community, who was born on August 11, 1959, in Devereux, Georgia to Annie Gay Grable and Albert Buck. Herbert departed this life on May 26, 2024, leaving behind a remarkable story filled with love, dedication, and service.
Herbert’s roots were firmly planted in faith, being a lifelong member of Sandy Run AME Church since childhood.
His early years saw him walking through the halls of Hancock Central High School, where he graduated in 1978. It was in those vibrant days of youth that Herbert found lifelong friendships and began his journey toward the man we came to love and respect. With a spirit of duty and patriotism, Herbert enlisted in the United States Navy upon graduation, serving our country with honor on active duty until 1982. Upon his return home to Sparta, he took up a role with the Georgia Department of Corrections and continued his service in the Army National Guard until 1986. Hid dedication to serving others extended beyond his military career as he worked at Georgia Power Plant Branch in Milledgeville, Georgia, where he dutifully served until his retirement in 2001. Herbert’s industrious spirit did not dim upon retirement. Rather, it ignited a new venture, earning him the affectionate nickname “The Tintman”. His window tinting business was well-known and is a testimony to his hard work and craftsmanship.
On June 3, 1989, Herbert united in Holy Matrimony with Lynda Gail Holsey. Their union was blessed with two wonderful children, Travis and Shanterra, who were the light of Herbert’s life. His life was a testament to the power of family and love, values he cherished deeply.
Herbert had a zest for life. He enjoyed spending time with his family traveling and restoring vintage vehicles. His passion for sports cars, especially Corvettes, led him to become a proud member of the Corvette Cruisers Car Club. These hobbies weren’t just pastimes; they were vital parts of who Herbert was- a man with an appreciation for elegance, speed, and vintage beauty.
Though Herbert faced the heartbreak of losing his beloved wife Lynda in 2017, he continued with strength and resilience. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his grandmother, Hattie Bundrage Grable, his aunts, Dorothy Taylor and Uncle Eugene Grable.
He leaves cherished memories and a legacy for his two children, Travis Grable of Augusta, GA, Shanterra Grable of Sparta, GA; his sister and brothers-in-law, Benessa Howell-Decker, Timothy Holsey of Centennial, CO and Avon Holsey of Sparta, GA; Aunts, Rosa (Nathan) Scott, Willie Mae (Lewis) Scott, Anna Bell Grable and Lillian Lucille Wagner of Hardwick, GA; Uncles, Willie Grable, Jessie Grable of Milledgeville, GA and Curtis Taylor of Sparta, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Special acknowledgements to his close friends, Antorio Wilson and Raymond McGhee III, and a cousin that he considered his brother, Richard Grable.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 3, 2024, at 11:00 AM from the Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church Sparta, Georgia. Interment to follow from Powell Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Devereux, Georgia.
