Obituary

Mr. Herbert Julian "Big Baby" Ford, of Milledgeville, Georgia passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2020 at Pruitt Health, Toomsboro, Georgia.

Graveside services were held privately with family.

Mr. Herbert Julian Ford was born on March 1, 1934, to the parentage of John Henry Ford and Ema Sauls Ford who both proceeded him in death. He was also proceeded in death by his first wife; Mary Jane Wright Ford, his second wife; Margaret Pinkston, his two sons; Michael Ford and Lewis Johnson, four brothers; Benjamin Ford, Anderson Ford, Sammie Ford and Wilbert Ford and one sister; Ida Bell Belts.

He was reared in the church. He joined Parker Springs Baptist Church in McIntyre, Georgia at the tender age of 10 years old. He attended this church for the rest of his life. He loved his church and his church family. He encouraged his family to attend for he knew it would change their lives. He was a trustee at the church and even helped with the parking ministry.

He attended Calhoun Elementary School in Irwinton, Georgia, however, his education was cut short as early as the third grade. His father had a fatal accident which forced Julian to leave school and obtain a job to care for the family. He helped his mom out by caring for his siblings, so much so, they referred to him as their “Santa Claus”. He was a proud man who knew exactly what he wanted, and he gave no apologies for it. He was a hard worker who loved farming, fishing and hunting. He farmed his own land and helped others with theirs. He’s grown everything from cotton to hogs. He’d go fishing as often as he could and taught his family how to prepare the fish he caught for their meal. He did the same with hunting. He was amazing with a rifle. He stopped hunting when his eyesight began to fail him but that didn’t stop him from preparing wonderful meals for his family. He loved to cook. He would cook everything from chicken and rice to turnips and neckbones. He’d make all the children smile with his made from scratch biscuits and cakes.

He was a proud father of nine children whom he fathered with his first wife and a proud stepfather of eight children whom he lovingly inherited with his second wife. Although he was a strict father, he instilled in his children what it meant to work hard and to take care of your own.

Julian is survived by his children, Julia Mae (Lennis) Ford and Odell Anderson, both of Milledgeville, Georgia, Herbert (Justine) Ford Jr., of Toombsboro, Georgia, John W. Ford, Melvin E. (Grace) Ford and Nathaniel Ford, all of Milledgeville, Georgia, Tracey (Earnest) Dennis of Toombsboro, Georgia, Billy (Beverly) Ford of Milledgeville, Georgia and Scotty (Tomika) Lewis of Toombsboro, Georgia. He is survived by two sisters, Alberta Coates and Addie Lee (Willie) Knight, both of Irwinton, Georgia, two brothers; Johnny C. Ford of Macon, Georgia and Herman Ford of Irwinton, Georgia. Special friends; Franklin Council, Sarah Jan Wynne and Julian Williams. He is also survived by his stepchildren, 18 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
