It is with sympathy, the management and staff of Slater’s Funeral Home, Inc. announce the passing of Mrs. Gurlee Thomas Greene, of Milledgeville, Georgia. Mrs. Greene passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2022.
Funeral services was held on Friday, March 25, 2022 at 11:00 AM from the Victory Baptist Church, Milledgeville, Georgia. Interment will follow in the Ga Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Milledgeville, Georgia.
Mrs. Gurlee Greene was born in Sumpter, South Carolina to Mary Gordon and James Thomas on April 6, 1930. Gurlee was the seventh of eight siblings; Jerome Thomas, Warren Thomas, Redfield Thomas, Tully Thomas, Mary Jenkins, Lessie Verner (all deceased) and a twin sister, Jerry Lee Mclemore. Gurlee attended Stone Hill Elementary School and Lincoln High School in Sumpter, South Carolina. She received her religious training at Brand Street Baptist Church, while actively participating in Sunday school during her youth. Gurlee continued her education at Williston High School in Wilmington, North Carolina. Gurlee joined Rising Sun Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania when she was 17 years old. She was a faithful member for more than forty years, and diligently served on both the mother’s board and the pastor’s aid. Gurlee married Mr. Peter J. Greene, Jr. on July 23, 1948. Of this union was born one son, Larry Edward, and two daughters, Patricia Ann and Evelyn Delane. Their union was blessed for sixty-one years prior to Peter’s homegoing in 2010. Mother Greene was employed by the Howard Coat and Apron Company for thirty years before retiring in 1992. She and Peter moved to his hometown of Richmond Hill, Georgia before making Milledgeville, Georgia their permanent home in 1995. Mother Greene became a member of Coopers Hill Baptist Church and was appointed to the mother’s board by Reverend C.F. Richardson; and she continued serving with Reverend Kenneth L. Oates as pastor. Gurlee is survived by her only living sibling and twin, Mrs. Jerry Lee Mclemore of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; her three children, Larry Greene (Salome) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Patricia Washington (Martin, Sr.), of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Evelyn Thomas (Bruce) of Milledgeville, Georgia; eleven grandchildren, Everrick Thomas, (Theresa), Monte’ Squire (Andrea), Emir Greene (deceased), Shawn Thomas (Valarie), Martin Washington, Jr. (Katrina), Michael Washington, Travis Washington (Nicole), Aja King (Frank), Ayanna Greene, Chantay Love, and Altovise Craighead (Michael); nineteen great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
