Geraldine Johnson Obituary

Mrs. Geraldine Johnson was born on August 28, 1936, in Wrightsville, Georgia, to the late Mr. Robert Lee Meridy and Mrs. Edith Johnson. She peacefully departed this life on March 7, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and devotion to family and community.

Mrs. Geraldine was united in marriage to Mr. James Johnson Sr., affectionately known as “Duke.” Together they built a loving home and raised seven children. She spent most of her adult life working as a homemaker, a role she carried out with dedication and pride. Outside of work, Mrs. Geraldine cherished spending time with her church family, loved ones, and friends. She found joy in cooking, baking, and tending to her gardens.

Mrs. Geraldine had many talents and hobbies that reflected her caring spirit. She loved cooking, baking, sewing, gardening, and singing. Food was truly her love language, and her kitchen was always filled with warmth and delicious aromas. Her homestyle country cooking became legendary among family and friends. She was famously known for her fried chicken, ham, collard greens, chicken dressing, sweet potato pie, butter cake with chocolate icing, pound cake, and German chocolate cake.

A devoted Christian, Mrs. Geraldine faithfully served at Harrison Spring Baptist Church. She sang in the Harrison Spring Senior Choir and rarely missed an opportunity to attend church events. She was also a valued member of the church kitchen staff, where she lovingly helped prepare meals to serve the congregation and community. Seeing others enjoy a good meal brought her great joy and a beautiful smile to her face.

In her spare time, Ms. Geraldine enjoyed sewing and mending clothes for family members, as well as creating patchwork blankets for those she loved. She also had a deep love for plants and gardening. Known for her green thumb, she nurtured not only plants but also generations of family members who benefited from her wisdom, kindness, and guidance. She lovingly passed down her skills and traditions to her children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Geraldine Johnson was preceded in death by her father, Mr. Robert Lee Meridy; her mother, Mrs. Edith Johnson; her beloved husband, Mr. James “Duke” Johnson Sr.; and three of their children: Mattie Lee Johnson, Brenda Bethea, and Tennille “Tim” Johnson. She was also preceded in death by her brothers Robert Lee Grady, Wayne Wright, Jessie Grady, and Arthur “Tootsie Boy” Brinson Jr.; her granddaughter Jessica Johnson; and two great-grandchildren.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories three daughters and one son: Mrs. Edith Mae Taylor, Miss Catherleen Johnson, Miss Christine Johnson, and Mr. James Johnson Jr. She also leaves behind her lifelong best friend and beloved cousin, Ms. Dorothy Taylor of Harrison, Georgia, whose bond with her was filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories throughout the years.

Mrs. Geraldine also leaves a loving legacy of 14 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren, along with a host of extended family members, church family, and friends who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.
