Eugene Willis Obituary

Albert “Eugene” Willis, affectionately known as Gene, lived a life filled with love, service, and a deep connection to others. Known for his warm heart and gift for conversation, Eugene never met a stranger. His passion for cars was evident in every interaction, often becoming the bridge that connected him with many.

Born on June 12, 1935, to the late Seabron Willis and Bessie Lee Willis, Eugene was raised with strong values and a love for community. As a young boy, he joined Scotts Chapel CME Church, later becoming a devoted member of Smith Chapel UME, where he served faithfully as a Steward. His dedication to his faith and his church family was unwavering.

Eugene was well-loved in his community, not only for his service but also for his culinary talents. He became locally known for his famous pink lemonade, buttermilk pies, peach cobbler, and pear preserves. A gifted cook, he found great joy in preparing meals and sharing them with others.

His professional journey began at Central State Hospital in 1951. He later began working at Freeport Kaolin (Chalk Mine) in Gordon, Georgia, where he dedicated 42 years of service. A skilled mechanic and entrepreneur, Eugene was also the proud owner of Franklin Street Garage. Even after retirement, his strong work ethic led him to start a lawn care service. He was a proud member of the Old Capitol Car Club, where he shared his lifelong love of automobiles with fellow enthusiasts.

Eugene's presence lit up every family gathering, often marked by his cherished phrase, “Who wouldn't serve a God like this?” His legacy of kindness, faith, hard work, and generosity will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Eugene was preceded in death by his devoted companion, Deborah Juanita Solomon; one daughter, Cynthia Diane Austin-Hale; and one great-grandson, Antonio May Jr. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Marcile Matthews and Addie Lee Willis; and three brothers, Seabron Willis Jr., John Mark Willis, and David Lee Willis.

He leaves to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy seven beloved children: Ruby Dean Hudson of Hinesville, GA; Albert Eugene Willis Jr. of Milledgeville, GA; Willie Bernard Willis Sr. of Milledgeville, GA; Debra Denise Wiggins of Milledgeville, GA; Seabron Kelvin Willis of Milledgeville, GA; Dr. Elinor Fay Willis of McDonough, GA; Theresa L. Willis of Milledgeville, GA and one loving brother Carlton (Beverly) Willis of Milledgeville, GA.

His legacy continues through 27 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren and a host of loving nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

He is leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, hard work, service, and impeccable style—always known for his sharp, stylish dress that reflected the pride he took in his appearance.
