Eugene Harden was the only son born to the parentage of former Etta Tarver Williams and former Walter Harden in Harrison, Georgia. His grandmother, mother, and aunts moved to Milledgeville, Ga at an early age. Due to his upbringing, he knew he needed to take care of his family, so he left school to work. He worked at various jobs, but the ones he was known for working at are Martin’s Theatre, Allen’s Market as a butcher, and the City of Milledgeville as a Laborer of which he retired in 1991.
Affectionately called “Gene” was loved by all who encountered him. He shared his wisdom and knowledge with all who would listen, and he loved talking to people. One of his favorite phrases was “Don’t take no wooden nickels.” Although he went to church with his aunts, he didn’t join the church until after the passing of his wife in 2003, Gene joined Rock of Ages Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years Dedora Butts Harden, his daughter Mary Harden, his sons Timothy and Edward Harden, and his first grandson Derrick Roach.
On Tuesday morning May 9, 2023, Eugene Harden peacefully transitioned from his earthly home to his heavenly home while surrounded by his loving family at Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin.
His memories will always be cherished and linger in the hearts of his family. He leaves behind his sons First Sergeant (Ret.) Willie (Maria) Harden of Louisville, KY, Michael (Deborah) of Irwinton, Ga, Travis (Jessica) Harden of Milledgeville; daughters Mercedes Davis, Jacqueline (Louis) Huley, Mattie Harden of Milledgeville; Grandchildren Whitney Harden, Jacquela (Kelvin Jr) Carswell, Yeoman First Class Crystal Sallad (Chesapeake, VA), JacQues Barksdale Sr, Salathia (Christain) Ford, Jaleesa Barksdale, Edward Harden, Aisha Harden, Joanna Barksdale, Louis aka Tre Huley, III, Langston Huley, Devrick Harden and Khyler Harden; Great Grandchildren Bryson Mosley, Jordyn Sallad, Kelvin Carswell III, Bri’Elle Mosley, Jaimie Sallad, Daniel Sallad, Kaytlan Barksdale, Kelsie Carswell, Austin Ford, JacQues Barksdale Jr, Emory Harden, Kelson Carswell, and Chandler Harden.
