It is with sympathy, the management and staff of Slater's Funeral Home, Inc. announce the passing of Mr. Dennis Tolbert Jr., Milledgeville, Georgia. Mr. Tolbert passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2022.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at 11:00 AM from the El Bethel Baptist Church, Milledgeville, Georgia. Interment followed in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery. The family received friends on Monday, May 16, 2022 from 6:00 to 7:00PM at Slater's Funeral Home.
Dennis Mosley Tolbert Jr. was born on Saturday, September 21, 1946, to the parentage of the late Mr. Dennis Mosley Tolbert Sr. & the late Mrs. Irene Williams Tolbert. The seventh of eight children, and the youngest son, Dennis was treasured by his older siblings. He was truly a big brother to his younger sister Dorothy. They shared a lifelong bond as the two youngest of the siblings. Dennis would go on to graduate from J. F. Boddie High School with the class of 1967.
Dennis married Mary Eugenia Davis on December 17, 1972. They were classmates having met at the fair in the 8th grade years prior before reconnecting and falling in love. God truly blessed their marriage as they enjoyed 49 beautiful years together.
A man of faith, Dennis gave his life to Christ at a young age and joined El Bethel Baptist Church where he regularly attended. This set a spiritual foundation for his family as his wife would transfer her membership to El Bethel and serve on the Missionary and Usher Boards. When his children eventually joined church, they sang in the Junior Choir.
Dennis believed that if there was anything worth doing in life, you should do it to the best of your ability. This mentality kept him with stable employment throughout his life. After high school, he worked at Central State Hospital for a few years before obtaining employment with Grumman as a forklift operator for over ten years. He moved on to Georgia College & State University where he worked as a custodian until he retired in 2008. He received recognition and honors while working at Georgia College & State University for excellence in job performance.
Though quiet and reserved, Dennis was a very observant person. He believed that you could tell a lot about people and situations in life just by observing. He stressed the importance of having character. He would often say there were things that a person of great character just would not do. He was a tall man of great stature, but he had a kind and genuine way with people. He enjoyed travel, going on many family vacations as well as trips with the Class of '67. His hobbies included listening to music and watching sports, among his favorites were football, baseball, and basketball.
Early afternoon on Thursday, May 12, 2022, Dennis passed away peacefully surrounded by his family as they held his hands and sang songs of praise ushering him into Heaven's Gates.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Dennis Mosley Tolbert Sr. and Irene Williams Tolbert; Five sisters, Lula T. Hurt, Angerine T. Samuels, Annie Maude T. Driskell, Gladys T. Wilbon, Dorothy Tolbert, and one brother William L. "Bro" Tolbert.
