Deacon William "Hoochee" Wright

Deacon William "Hoochee" Wright, of Steven's Pottery, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at Navicent Health Macon, Georgia.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 2:30 PM from the Coopers Hill Baptist Church with the interment followed in Scott's Chapel Church Cemetery, Steven's Pottery, Georgia. 

A Time to Be Born Ecclesiastes 3:2

                Deacon Wright was born December 6, 1930 to the parentage of Genie and Mattie D. Wright in Putnam County, Georgia.  He was the second oldest child.  His mother, father, and his brothers Walter Wright and Rogers Wright preceded him in death.

A Time to Love Ecclesiastes 3:8

                Deacon Wright was married to the former Clara Reese for over forty-five (45) years. To this union, this were blessed wit six (6) daughters, Mattie, Clara, JoAnn, Geneva, Glenda, and Wilma. Clara, his wife, preceded him in death.

                He loved his family so much that he worked three (3) jobs at one time to ensure that his family had what they needed.  He would drive the school bus in the morning, lay bricks during the day, drive th bus in the evening, and worked the graveyard shift at Madison Throwing Company and YDC.  All the kids that rode Deacon Wright’s bus felt safe, because they knew he strived to protect all of them.  He retired from Baldwin County School System in 1992.

                Deacon Wright professed his love for Christ at an early age and joined Coopers Hill Baptist Church.  He worked tirelessly in the church serving in the capacity of a deacon for over fifty (50) year, serving as superintendent of Sunday School for over fifteen (15) year, one of the lead singer in the Male Chorus as well as the 4th Sunday Choir.  One of his favorite songs that he sung was “Over Yonder” by Slim and the Supreme Angels.  He would always ask the church, “To Come and Go with Me” and he would say “Over Where”. The choir would say “To the Promise Land”.  Deacon Wright has made it to the “Promised Land”.

                Singing was one of Deacon Wright’s passion.  He was one of the original great Piney Groves singers of Milledgeville, Georgia.  They sung with some of the greatest. On one program, they were the opening group for the “Mighty Clouds of Joy”.

                Deacon Wright enjoyed traveling with his family.  He stated “I have traveled by car, bus, ship, and plane.”  “I have done it all and have enjoyed traveling with my children and grandchildren.”

A Time to Build Ecclesiastes 3:3

                Deacon Wright truly loved the Lord and his church so much that he went from church to church praising God singing hymns and praying prayers.  He was known for setting the church on fire with his soul stirring prayer. He gave himself unselfishly by being instrumental in teaching young deacons how to raise a hymn and to pray. His favorite hymn was “A Charge to Keep I Have”.

Deacon  Wright was a self taught carpenter.  He will always be remembered in the history of Coopers Hill Church for building the first baptizing pool and the first choir stand for the church.  He also aspired on many other projects to build God’s kingdom.

                Deacon Wright served as President of the 5th Sunday Usher’s Convention until his health failed. His goal was to bring all the churches together to fellowship and raise funds for the up building of God’s kingdom. He always said “Let’s take this program higher and higher every 5th Sunday.”

                Deacon Wright was big on education because he did not have the opportunity to go to school when he was young.  After he gave all his daughters away in marriage, he decided to pursue his education.  He began attending GED classes.  His goal was to learn to read the bible for himself.  He was so proud to stand and read the bible verses in Sunday school.

A Time to Die

                After four scores and seven, God decided that Deacon Wright had fought a good fight, he had finished his course and he had kept the faith.  God called him home Tuesday, October 30, 2008 surrounded by his family.  A job well done.  A life well lived.  A reward well deserve.  A precious jewel that was respected by his family, his community, and his church.  A precious jewel that will never be forgotten.

A Time to Weep and Laugh

                Deacon Wright leaves a legacy of love and lots of memories in his six daughters, Mattie Hill, Clara Pat (Cary) Griffin, JoAnn (Sammy) Clark, Geneva (Jimmy) Chatman, Glenda (Arceafus, Sr.) Curry, and Wilma Love.  A devoted friend, Ms. Dissis Larkin, Grandchildren, Reginald (Mary) Wright, Tonya Griffin, Rhonda (Greg) James, Jeremy (Friend, Tarsha) Hill, Jarrett (Kia) Hill, Jimell Chatman, Alonna Curry, Kelvin (Fiancee, Omeshia) Love, Arceafus Curry, Jr., Joris Chatman, and Kiara Love; five great-grandchildren, Amya Hill, Tyler James, Reginald Wright, Jr., Christian James and Kyla love; Sisters-in-law, Viola Willis, Emma Wilson; Brother-in-law, Robert (Fannie Mae) Allen, Goddaughter, Shirley (Richard) Standifer; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
