It is with sympathy, the management and staff of Slater’s Funeral Home, Inc. announce the death of Mr. David Johnson, Milledgeville, Georgia. Mr. Johnson passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2023.

Funeral Services were held on Monday May 8, 2023, at 2:00 PM from the Rock Mill Baptist Church, Milledgeville, Georgia. Interment to follow from the Baldwin memorial Garden. 

Mr. David “Dave” Johnson Jr. was born on February 24, 1946 to the parentage of the late Dave Johnson, Sr. and the late Julia Bell Reeves Johnson.  David attended the public schools of Baldwin County, graduating in 1966 from J. F. Boddie High School.  He dedicated his life back to Christ at Rock Mill Baptist Church. He was affectionately known as “Dave”, “Big D”, “Pops” and “Grandaddy.”  He recently celebrated 55 years of marriage to his devoted wife Carlene Harris Johnson, whom he married on February 2, 1968.  They share three loving children.  David was a dedicated father and grandfather. He loved attending family birthday parties and outings for his children and 10 grandchildren.

 

He was employed at McGaw Laboratory as a supervisor until their closing in 1986. His latter years he worked as a professional painter, appliance maintenance technician, and manufacturer with Glasrite and Haband. Dave was an excellent marksman, hunter, fisherman, gardener, and swimmer. One of his favorite past times was watching the Atlanta Braves.  

 

David Johnson Jr. transitioned into eternal rest on Saturday, April 29, 2023.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his three brothers: Larry Johnson, Leroy Johnson, and Rogers Johnson, sister Bernice Johnson and son-in-law, Minister Orlando Pounds. 

 

Cherishing his memory, he leaves his loving wife, Carlene Harris Johnson; his children Evangelist Carla Johnson Pounds of McDonough, GA, Dr. La Tonja Johnson-Young (Chief Victor) of Milledgeville, GA, and Brian Johnson of Milledgeville, GA.  He adored his grandchildren: Charell Brown, Jessica Vann, Jahrea Brown, Victoria Young, Brian Johnson II, Morgan Pounds, Carlei Johnson, Victor Tyler Young, Phillip Johnson, and Averi Johnson.

 

He is also survived by his devoted siblings Christine Brantley, Joe Reeves (Irma), Julious Johnson (Betty), all of Milledgeville; sisters-in-law: Phyllis Harris  of Milledgeville, GA and Earnestine Johnson of Atlanta, GA; and brothers-in-law: Algie Harris Jr, Carl Harris of Milledgeville, GA and Julius Harris of Erie, Pennsylvania; devoted cousin, Alzonia Clark and a host of nieces, nephews, family members and friends. Devoted friends Earl Butts, Johnnie Woolfork, Bill Green, Henry Holsey and Tommy Johnson. A special thanks to Eugene Lundy, Toni Pounds, Nashae Harris, Haley Hurley, and Compassus Hospice.
