Betty Jean Harris Hightower, 79 of Milledgeville Georgia was called Home on Sunday, September 18, 2022, after being cared for lovingly by her family. Betty Jean was born February 22, 1943, in Milledgeville, Georgia, the daughter of Mitchell and Emma Harris. She graduated from Boddie High School and attended Savannah State College in pursuit of a bachelor's degree. She wedded Willie “Peewee” Hightower in July of 1967 and three daughters, Patricia, Pamela and Leann, were born of their 42-year union.

Betty Jean was an active member of the Junior Bon Amies Social & Civic club, The American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the Vaughn Chapel Missionary Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and was part of the kitchen/hospitality committee. She retired her duties as a health service technician from Central State Hospital. It was through her work and community affiliations that Betty Jean's personality really shone. All who knew her could attest to her kind and generous spirit. Betty jean had a calming spirit that drew others to her for counseling, encouragement, nourishment and sometimes a swift kick in the seat of the pants but even that was given with the best of intentions and always with love.

Let us not forget that she was funny and the life of the party. Her antics will be recalled far and wide as she always had a joke handy to fit any situation and was a fantastic storyteller. Another thing that made her great at a party was she could dance and loved it! Betty Jean was a great dancer, whether high stepping as a Boddie High Majorette to dancing with her girls in the kitchen, she showed the same joy and exuberance.

We cannot remember Betty Jean and not mention her cooking! Betty Jean began cooking for the High school football team because at that time it was not safe nor easy for Black athletes to just stop at a restaurant for food while traveling; so, the home economics classes would prepare meals for the team on game day. Needless to say, large quantities of food were needed. She was never able to scale back on the amounts and with good reason, she felt it in her heart to spread love through her food. She was her resident family wildlife cooker and of the famed Lemon Chicken and rice.

Betty Jean is preceded in death by her Parents, Mitchell and Louise Harris, brother, Nathaniel Harris and husband, Willie” Peewee” Hightower.

Remaining to Cherish her memory are her daughters: Patricia Hightower, Pamela (Michael) Holmes and Julia Hightower; Granddaughters: Shekyra Hightower, Lasheria Hightower, Nkenge Hightower, Anitra Watson and Ariel Curry; Great granddaughter: Bessyn Hightower; Devoted nieces and nephews: Dr Tara (Tony) Haywood, Anita Hightower, Lisa Hightower; Donald Butts, Tony Hicks, Michael Hightower, Keyon Hightower, Emory Cannon, Dwaine Marshall, Gary Hightower, Christopher Hightower and a host of loving family and friends.
