Mrs. Betty J. Barnes was born May 19, 1956 to the parentage of the late Mr. Joseph Hill, Sr. and Mrs. Marie Patterson Miller Hill. Betty was the third child of eight born to this union. Betty was a resident and homeowner of Haddock, GA and later a resident of Milledgeville, GA. Betty departed this life surrounded by her beloved family members after an extended illness.

On June 1, 1974, Betty married her high school sweet heart Carlton Gardner and remained married until 2001. Unto this union two children were born, Toni D. Gardner, and Jeremy C. Gardner (Denise). Betty attended Georgia State College and University in the fall of 1975 where she maintained an A average and earned her Associate of Nursing. In 1976, Carlton introduced Betty to Jehovah’s Witnesses and they were baptized and began attending the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on a regular basis. Betty was a self-sacrificing, dedicated, and humble servant of Jehovah.

She began her career as a Registered Nurse at Baldwin County Hospital and, in 1981, she was hired by Central State Hospital where she later retired with 32 years of service. She was known for her professionalism and dedication to excellence.

On February 18th, 2016, she entered into Holy Matrimony to her friend and love of 14 years, Billy Barnes. With this union, her family blended to include four children: Fernadro D. Barnes, LaToya C. Barnes, Tearance T. Barnes, Shandreia F. Barnes who she loved dearly.

Betty always looked for ways to help others. She was a hard worker, a dedicated mother, a devoted wife, a loving grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend to many. Family was very important to her, and she was beloved by all.

Betty was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Hill, Jr., sister, Josephine Gray Williams, and sister-in-law, Katina Barnes. She is survived by her aunt: Laconia James; sisters: Pandora Jimerson, Tericeta Smith, and Mona L. Balkcom; brothers: Marcus J. Hill, Sr. (Virginia), Tony M. Hill, Sr. (Tammy), and Tyrone C. Hill (Catrina); brothers-in-law: Glenn Barnes, and Charles Barnes; and sisters-in-law: Jorell Robinson, Linda Turner (Lorenzo), Gwinnett Bates (Steve), and Ree V. Barnes. She has 9 grandchildren: Addison, Alina, Drayson, Isaiah, Jasiah, Jayce, Ronald, Ryan, and Trinity. She is also cherished by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.
