Bessie Lewis was born on April 23, 1923, in Hancock County to the late Ceola Andrews and the late Cora Poe Andrews.
She attended school in Hancock County. She joined Brown Chapel at an early age and later became a member of Saint Mary Missionary Baptist Church. She was married to George Lewis.
Bessie worked for the Goldsteins for many years. She worked at Boddie Middle School as a custodian and at the Bowland Building as a devoted grandparent until she began to have health issues.
She moved from Milledgeville, Georgia to Riverdale, Georgia in 2012.
Her hobbies were listening to gospel music, cooking, shopping, and talking on the phone.
Bessie entered eternal life on Sunday, March 3, 2024.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Georgia May Lewis Larkin; two sons, John Lewis and Luther Lewis; three sisters, Mamie Gilmore, Annie Mae Scott, and Dorothy Flagg; five brothers, Ben Andrews, Ceola Andrews, Jr., Johnny Andrews, Leroy Andrews and B.J. Andrews.
She is survived by three devoted daughters, Annette Stanley and Betty Jackson of Milledgeville, GA, Brenda Nelson of Riverdale, GA; devoted son, Umar Shabazz of California; devoted sister, Edna Doughetry of Milledgeville, GA; sister-in-law, Catherine Andrews of Atlanta, GA and Eunice Dixon of Sparta, GA; daughter-in-law, Julia Mae Lewis of Sparta, GA; son-in-law, Timothy Larkin, Sr. of Pompano Beach, FL; devoted nieces, Edna Forney (Frank), Shirley Flowers of Milledgeville, GA, Shirley Flagg, Waikeeth Flagg, Patricia Henderson (J.C.), Tomekia Glass (Kenneth), Barbara Warren, all of Atlanta, GA, and Edna Howard of Elizabeth, N.J.; devoted nephews, John Andrews (Emma) of Atlanta, GA, Wilson Andrews (Dean) of Milledgeville, GA, Ronnie Andrews (Denise) of Gray, GA, Bobby Flagg of Atlanta, GA, and Johnny Scott (Milissia) of Elizabeth, N.J.; like daughters, Melva Brown and Janie Hawkins; devoted friends, Eva Mae Willis, Clara Davis, Dorothy Davis, Bessie M. Smith, Gladys Fraley; twenty-six devoted grandchildren; fifty-five great grandchildren; sixty-three great-great grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends; a devoted pastor, Rev. Ellison and wife Evangelist Estella Ellison.
