Mrs. Annie Inez Thompkins Hurt, a native of Eatonton, Georgia, departed this life on October 20, 2024 in Savannah, Georgia. She was born on January 25, 1934 to the parentage of the late Rev. John T. Thompkins and the late Mrs. Aquilla Inez Farley Thompkins. In addition to her late parents, Annie was preceded in death by her husband: Melvin Hurt, daughter: Anita Updike, brothers: Rev. Timothy Thompkins, John Thomas Thompkins, Larry Thompkins, sisters: Joyce Thompkins Adam, Autherine Thompkins Ford and brother-in-law: Rogers Reaves Jr.
Annie was educated in the Putnam County School System in Eatonton, Georgia. She was a whiz at math, but her passion was fixing hair and as the years passed, she opened her own beauty shop, “Inez's Beauty Shop” and continued to fix hair up until the mid of October of this year. She also worked at various other jobs including Davis Convenience Store, Baldwin County Hospital, and The Central State Hospital of Milledgeville as a supervisor and other capacities and locations as needed, and she retired after working there for over 35 years.
Annie and her family were long time members of “The Vaughn Chapel Baptist Church” of Milledgeville where she served on various committees. She served as president of the Deaconess Board, she sang in the choir, and worked on the Benevolent Committee until the year of covid, about four years ago.
Annie was always willing to help wherever she could in any situation. She was a loving wife and mother, a person who provided a listening ear, and she knew how to go about pointing others in a positive direction, because she had a unique spirit in the belief of Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
She was married to Melvin Hurt Sr. for seventy years, the “love of her life.” They moved to Milledgeville in the fifties and to this union they were blessed with four children: sons: Melvin Hurt Jr. (Betty), Lorenzo Hurt (Brenda), daughter: Sandra Faye Lall (Anand), all of Savannah Georgia; the late Anita Updike (Kristopher) of Mobile Alabama. Grandsons: Daniel Barrani (Saqqarah Corbett), Micah David Lall; great grandsons: Zyon Landon Yates, Jason Moran II; Granddaughters: Nadia Barrani, Chanda Moran, Charisse Hurt, Chrishonda Brown Breanna Hurt, Takeia Yates, Tanya Vaughn; Great granddaughters: Keyra Moran, Caelynn Hosking, Kaezlyn Corbett. Also left to cherish her memories are her siblings Rudene Ash, Robert Thompkins, Martha Parham (Charles), George W. Thompkins (Rachel), Rev. Harriet Camp, Lois Reaves, James Baker (Nettie), Willie F. Thompkins, Mildred E. Thompkins, Apostle Margaret Howard, Rev. Samuel Thompkins (Ernestine), Joseph Thompkins, and Apostle Regina Thompkins. Grandchildren, great grandchildren, a devoted nephew: Rogers Baker Reaves III who she took under her wings as a son, and accompanied him on various school activities when his parents were unable to be there, and also to cherish her memories a host of other family members, relatives, friends, and the Vaughn Chapel Church Family-whom she loved deeply.
